1980 Suzuki GS 850 noisy top end

I have a1980 gs850g. Rebuilt the top end. Valves were done by a machine shop. Carbs overhauled by a repair shop. New rings, the valve's set by a mechanic also timing chain replaced with cam chain and a master link. Bike sounds like a sewing machine. Mechanic readjusted or checked valves clearance again. Still sounds the same. At a loss as to what could be making so much noise. All in the top end. @

i would go with the mechanics advice and allow them to fix it. 1200 to 1500 beats spending 4000 on another motor if that one can be saved

how many miles on engine?
..stop, get quotes for rebuilt complete ../and complete low mileage used motor to compare before spending any more money

you may have a collapsed lifter

Not likely. You have a 4 cyl engine with over head cam. It has hydrolic lifters. If it wasn't making the noise before he replaced the chain, then its something he did...or didn't do. If it was making the noise before, most common reason would be 1 or more lifters not pumping up. If you have a six cyl, no one changed the timing chain, (It doesn't have one!) The 3.0 6cyl has a belt.

I have a similar problem. I just replaced the water pump and now the POS wont start. Like it is not getting fuel>

Hi, James could be an improperly adjusted cam chain tensioner otherwise I would love to help you with your engine or chassis noise but I just loaned my brand new pair of listening ears to your local dealer's chief technician so he could take your bike for a test ride and give you his professional opinion and estimate about your noise and repair cost. If you are a little short on "DRACHMA" and a Dealership is not on your list of fun places to visit then perhaps the list below will help soothe your worried mind so you can make an informed decision.
